Recipients of the 2017 Unsung Heroes of MSTA Award were chosen by the MSTA field service coordinators and were celebrated at the annual Convention. The award recognizes those who have made a substantive, yet unrecognized, contribution to MSTA and our mission to advocate for and empower public educators so they can teach. These people are admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. We will share profiles of the honorees each Monday, Wednesday and Friday in January and February.

What is one of your goals for this year?
One of my goals for this year is to help my students really see themselves as Mathematicians and Scientists. We have been working with Growth Mindset to help us develop to our full potential. It has started off great this year!
What would make this the Best Year Ever?
This would be the Best Year Ever if I helped change at least one of my students’ perceptions of themselves in the positive. So many of our students and families think that if math doesn’t come easy for them, they are just “not math people”. I want to help them grow from there and see that we can all be “math people”. It is just how we look at it.
How did you get involved with MSTA?
Why did you want to be involved with MSTA leadership? I wanted to be involved with MSTA Leadership because I enjoy helping teachers see that they have a voice and that people really do listen. So often it feels like we go unheard, but with MSTA that is not the case. I also enjoy helping other teachers get involved at events like Convention and Legislative Day so they actually get to see what MSTA does to support and empower teachers.
How has MSTA helped your career?
What advice would you give to someone wanting to become more involved with MSTA? If someone is interested in getting more involved with MSTA I would advise them to speak with their field service coordinator. They are the most helpful people and can guide you into a more involved role that fits your needs.
What is something on your bucket list?
One thing on my bucket list is to go skydiving. It is totally out of character for me, and once my children are grown I have to do it!
How do you like to spend your free time?
I love to spend my free time with my 4 children. Watching them grow makes every day an adventure and exciting. Being a mom is my favorite thing about myself.
What is your favorite school lunch?
My favorite school lunch is Nachos! But, that is also my favorite out-of-school lunch as well!
If you were a baseball player, what would your walk-up song be?
If I were a baseball player I think my walk-up song would be Fighter by Christina Aguilera, because every struggle I have faced in life has just made me that much stronger. It is all about empowerment.
If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
If I had a super power it would be the ability to teleport. I have so much going on and feel like I waste so much time in commute to different things.
