Recipients of the 2017 Unsung Heroes of MSTA Award were chosen by the MSTA field service coordinators and were celebrated at the annual Convention. The award recognizes those who have made a substantive, yet unrecognized, contribution to MSTA and our mission to advocate for and empower public educators so they can teach. These people are admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. We will share profiles of the honorees each Monday, Wednesday and Friday in January and February.
School District: Sedalia 200
School Building: Parkview Elementary
Grade/Subject Taught: This year is 4th grade Reading/Writing (ELA). I have taught 1st grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade
Years Teaching: This is my 13th year teaching
Years in MSTA: This is my 13th year
What is one of your goals for this year?
I love helping my students discover their love of reading. My personal goal, every year, is to find the book or series for each child that makes them fall in love with reading and want to read more. My favorite part of the day is having book discussions and conferencing with my students. They are such sponges- they soak it all in and I LOVE it. When they run into my classroom in the morning to tell me they finished a book, or about a funny part, or tell me something they learned, or any connection made, etc… that is why I love to teach. That is my personal goal every year- to make lifelong readers.
What would make this the BEST year ever?
Having each student find their own level of success would make this the best year. I know not all students are on the same level or in the same spot of their learning career- what I want them to find is success. Whether that is making the benchmark goal for their grade or improving their reading level just a few tenths of a point. Any success is celebrated in my classroom and knowing that each student in my classroom is proud of themselves and continuing to work to make themselves grow and become a better person- then that makes my job worth it. Those moments of success are what contribute to having the best year ever.
How has MSTA helped your career?
Being involved with MSTA has given me so many connections in the educational field that I didn’t have before. I have colleagues from many different districts that I can now bounce ideas off of. I also have a helpline with Mike Martin. I know that I can call Mike with any issue or question whenever I need help and he will be there to guide me and help me. MSTA has provided me with many chances to attend workshops and better my career. Many of my most favorite practices came from a workshop at the MSTA conventions that I have attended.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to become more involved with MSTA?
I would tell anyone interested to do it. You won’t regret becoming more involved- it will only better your career!!
What is something on your bucket list?
I would love to tour Europe (and many other parts of the world). There are so many pieces of history and landmarks there. Earth is so large and we spend most of our lives in the same location – I want to get out and explore. I want to see ALL that there is to offer in our world.
What is something about you that would surprise your students?
I wasn’t the best student growing up. I made many mistakes and embarrassed myself many times in the classroom. I wasn’t a straight A or top student throughout my whole student career- I had to work HARD to get the grades I did. When I push my students it is because I know that they are worth it and capable of it- whether it comes easy to them or not. They CAN do it!!
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to sleep!! 🙂
No- I love to travel. I don’t get to do it often but I am just so mesmerized by all the amazing places there are in our world and I want to see it all and take it all in. I also love to spend time with my daughter- I treasure every moment with her.
If you were a baseball player, what would your walk up song be?
This is so hard!! I would say: Living on a Prayer
Favorite school lunch:
Tator Tot casserole- so yummy!!
If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
I think I would want to fly- how neat would it be to be able to soar over everything and fly wherever I wanted??
